59 Heartbeats was originally created by Irina Danilova as the opening page for the digital version of Project 59, developed in 1999–2000 during the Longwood Art Residency, the first designated digital art residency in New York. About a dozen interactive Flash projects were produced there.
Flash software was discontinued in 2020. In 2024 - 2026, Elizaveta Yuzhakova restored the Flash projects.
The version of 59 Heartbeats presented on this page was created in 2016 for the exhibition Clinic in Nizhny Tagil, Russia. The sound installation, 59 Heartbeats in 59 Seconds — an excellent resting heart rate for women and an athletic one for men — was intended to synchronize the audience’s heartbeats, echoing the phenomenon of chronometric synchronization. The archival page can be found here.
