           IRINA DANILOVA

Project 59, one of Irina Danilova'a major art projects, started at the end of 1994 during the first year in New York City at the School of Visual Art. It was conceived as a one-year project (for the major part of graduate program) with a flip of the last two digits of the year: 1995. 95 as bread and butter, 59 as butter and bread was one of the first statements of the project. It took off in 1995 and has never stopped, undermining the original plan. Experimental projects, with a random number as a substitute for its theme, meant to be playful and flexible. It happened to also be a convenient universal tool for approaching different topics and for a variety of artistic interventions. From the exploration of the verticality of New York City (climbing 59 floors of the MetLife Building in 1995) to setting parameters of the project within the basic elements, Water (diving 59 feet under in 1998); Air (flying 5900 feet above in 1998 and with free fall through 5900 in 2018; the Earth (hike to the intersection of the 59th latitude with 59th longitude in 1999). Project 59 has become a life long adventure, it calls for new events, rituals, serial projects. Among some of the most notable serial projects, are the 59 Seconds Video Festival (2005-2008, 59 videos shown 59 times around the globe), Citydrawings (2009-2014, driving or walking around 59 different cities in the shape of number 59), Dinner 59 (59 dinners compiled with dishes cooked from pages number 59 in different cookbooks, held every 59 days). Dinner #47 was held on 59th day of the year at the BRAC Gallery.
